From the ground of being
joy springs forth.
May we not bury it
beneath our many worries
and concerns. Rather,
may that joy sustain us
in the midst of our struggles
within and without.
JDG
Right here, right now, as I sit down to write,
my cat plants her
purring self
on my
lap
and
begins
to nudge my
writing hand as
if to say, “You can write another day.
I’m old and I
need you right
here, right
now.”
She
is soon
joined by a
lonely dog, and
right here, right now, I set my pen aside.

What – a slight powder
of snow and the schools didn’t
Lord, thou knows better than I know myself that I am growing older and will some day be old. Keep me from the fatal habit of thinking I must say something on every subject and on every occasion. Release me from craving to straighten everybody’s affairs. Make me thoughtful, but not moody, helpful but not bossy. With my vast store of wisdom, it seems a pity not to use it all, but thou knows Lord that I want a few friends at the end,
Keep my mind free from the recital of endless details, give me wings to get to the point. Seal my lips on my aches and pains. They are increasing and love of rehearsing them is becoming sweeter as the years go by. I dare not ask for grace enough to enjoy the tales of others’ pains, but help me endure them with patience.

How far is too far,
how much is too much before
we, at last, say “no”?

“Treat everyone like they might be Jesus,”
she said, this granddaughter of mine.
Seeing me perk up,
she shook her head and went on to say,
“Sorry, Gaba.
I’ve lived with you too long. There is no way.”

When the sun sets on
this cold winter day, may we
find satisfaction
in the warmth we were able
to bring and the light we shared.

on the heart we’re listening
from – open or closed.

On this sunny January day, why
not celebrate
both cold and
warmth? What

us
in the
shadows? Let’s
step forth and claim
