I’m trying to think
in terms of “getting to”. but
“having to” raises
its stubborn head and hisses
convincingly in my ear.

I almost fell back into my old rut,
but instead I
moved into
my new
groove.

In this world of speed and impatience,
where to wait a minute
is to wait a minute too long,
moving slow and taking your time
is the ultimate rebellion.

If you had told me
I would keep up this routine
of exercise and
reach a benchmark of one hundred
days, I’d have asked if
you’d been drinking, but that day
has arrived and here I am.

“If cats have nine lives,
then we’ll surely meet Elaine
again. Do you think
we’ll recognize her,” she asked,
then quickly said, “Toby will.”

After two days of
not doing, I found it
a little harder to do.
but I gathered myself up
and began again.

We knew the time was
getting close when our beloved,
elderly cat, Elaine,
suddenly began seeking
out solitary,
dark, enclosed spaces to rest.
But in the end she
chose to die in the open,
curled up next to her
old dog friend, Toby, who kept
a sad and sacred watch.

Sun met Frost today
and they had a sparkling talk
about what’s to come.

I’m learning to invest myself, body
and spirit, in
the heavens
and the
earth.

On this rainy day
when a good book beckoned,
I sighed and momentarily
turned aside. “It doesn’t
have to be either or”,
I whispered to myself,
” first the workout,
then the book.”
I’m glad now I listened
to both the whisper and the sigh.
