Tiny tip of pine
lying on the ground,
green needles fanning out
from gently curving stem,
what calamity brought you here
for me to see and hold –
so tiny and so broken,
you who were once part of
a green and greater whole.

“Seriously, Gaba,” my granddaughter said,
“you might need some help.
First it was paying attention
to your right big toe
and now you’re raving about
toenail clippers. I understand
your appreciation for ingenuity
and good design, but really…
clippers with magnifying glasses
and Einstein quotes? Clippers with grippers
for aging folks?
Other grandmothers take note of
birds and flowers, clouds, and trees.
Gaba, get help. I beg you. Please.”

Late January

The sky today showed us how it’s done.
Wispy clouds of white fluff
edged next to those of more somber hue.
Doves rose and hawks descended
as the sun played hide and seek,
scattering light and shadow –
all in a vast field of spacious allowing.

When my heart and mind
open wide and there’s enough space
for you to stand in the fullness
of your being, only then
can a real encounter begin.

“In heaven you won’t need technology,
so if I were you,
I’d start shaping up now
’cause I’ve often heard you mutter,
‘to hell with technology’,
and I don’t know
who would have it worse,
you or technology,
if you were bound together
for all eternity.”

Sometimes limitations of form
expand imagination.
When all things aren’t possible,
some things still are.
It’s our task to find them.

What if the rest of nature built a wall
to keep humans
confined for
the earth’s
good?
