When I heard this many years ago,
I thought it made sense and I’d begin.
Little did I know how hard it would be
or how long it would take.
I’m still learning at seventy eight.

on the planet before
I began to find
inner peace by
developing simple habits
of basic self-care.

Startled by a sudden noise,
the first wild blue heron
to visit our pond this year
made a quick departure
leaving a wash of ripples
in his wake. I hope
his first appearance
isn’t his last.

When navigating
my nervous system.
I’ve discovered
the shortest route is
not always the best.

The crunch of gravel
beneath my feet, bird song in
the air. A distant
rooster crows. Cows loudly moo.
Knox barks at squirrel. My soul sings.

Redbud and dogwood,
Bradford pear and cherry
add their colorful voices
to the surging green
music of Spring.

I’m learning from Knox
to spend less time
in my head
and more time
roaming about.

Tiny flowers dot
the lawn in shades of purple,
blue, white, and yellow,
reminding us you don’t have
to be big to be noticed.

When I told my dog
he was beloved, I swear he
sighed and rolled his eyes.
