How quickly days change –
grey to gold to grey, then back
again. Neither gold
nor grey can stay, no matter
what those lazy pundits say.

Letting the quiet
settle into my bones this
morning. Preparing
for the noisy day ahead,
I watch my breath rise and fall.

Some trees raise their limbs
in fiery protest. Who
could possibly call
them mute when, after all, they
gave their blazing best to Fall?

We can enjoy this
year’s muted autumn color
or we can compare
it to the blaze of former
years and sadly find it wanting.
