the pond’s shore then suddenly
turns and swims away.

Grey clouds crowd the sky
leaving no room for the sun,
but still the birds sing
helping us to see that there’s
always a song to be sung

Tiny bits of green
peek out from outstretched branches
testing if the time
is right for them to spring forth
and grace us with their presence.

A moment ago
a mother deer and her fawn
dashed across the lawn
pursued by the moon’s slow rise
and an owl’s questioning cry.

I took my worries
for an early morning walk,
but they chose to take
a rest when we came upon
the sun kissing the morning dew.

With indignation
Knox surveys the falling rain
then looks up at me
as if to say “I guess this
means another indoor day.”

Slipping and sliding
becomes splishing and splashing
as the icy mass
slowly succumbs to warmer
temperatures and the sun.

Knox emerges from
the mist carrying a huge
blue ball stolen from
his friend Pax and brought home to
supplement his store of sticks.

Woke up too early.
Tried to bribe the sleep makers
with a poem, but
there were no takers so I’ll
try counting each breath instead.

In a show of white,
the snow stops us in our tracks,
asks us to take in
the beauty of the moment,
the vast expanse of time.
