My first order of
business this Thanksgiving is
to have no business
other than deep gratitude
for my granddaughters who cook.

Sometimes we search for
an answer to a question
not yet clearly formed
and then fret and fume because
we get a garbled reply.

Just as too much light
on rain-soaked roads can make it
hard to see, too much
thought can divert heart’s mission
as we walk grief’s sodden path.

Just last week they were
decked out in golden garb,
but now their bare limbs
shiver as fall fades into
the cold and dark of winter.

Some trees seem to have
adopted our speedy ways
as they take a sharp
turn on green and pause at red.
Who can know what lies ahead?

When we only care
about getting to the top,
we’re not ready for
climb-it change. What if when we
get to the top, nothing’s there?

The blast that went out
several days ago was just
a test, but we ARE
in the midst of a supreme
national emergency.

If I feel my fear,
but don’t fight, flee, freeze or fold,
I will discover
resources I didn’t know,
ways that couldn’t be foretold.

As I survey my
to-do list, I wish I felt
the sparkle I see
in early morning sun-light
dancing on lingering dew.
