There they go again,
splashing in the fountain on
this cold, winter day.
Why they do this I can’t say.
After all, it isn’t May.

Though some surrendered
and fell, by afternoon trees
and bushes began
to shed the heavy burden
of beauty bestowed by snow.

Part of the pond is
wrapped in fog, unable to
reflect the heavens
above. Maybe if we pause…
we’ll see a metaphor here.

While waiting for my
Covid test results, I
slept my time away on
that warm, seventy degree
post Christmas, Virginia day.

Don’t know which causes
the biggest flutter, the wind
or the hungry birds,
but the cats seem interested
in one and not the other.

On this cold morning
the cats and I watch the birds,
but Knox ignores them.
The squirrels, deer, and passing cars
hold much more interest for him.

Granddaughters at play
in the living room loudly
proclaim.”Peace on earth!”
and seeking that very peace,
I depart to my bedroom.

Knox’s friend, Molly,
is moving in just ten days,
but today they played,
enjoying each romp and roll,
oblivious of the morrow.
