The Solace Of Silence

After dogs and cats

are fed, but before the kids

begin to stir, We

sit, my soul and I, and for

a time, converse. Though

time is short and there’s much to

say, it’s the silence we seek.

The Wisdom Of Innocents

Sitting discretely

across the room in Five Guys

while my granddaughter,

now fourteen, celebrates her

birthday with a beau

of the same age, I reflect

on their obvious

enjoyment of each other

and their total lack

of self-consciousness though she

is five eleven

and he no more than five five.

Their relationship

has endured over time and

her change of schools. It

could serve as a model for

more “adult” relationships.

Up Against It

When we’re up against

it, taking the long view is

not the first thing that

springs to mind. Just getting through,

around or by is

the filter through which we see,

the portal through which we flee.

Tell Me, Please

And so it goes, this

endless round of lost and found.

Umbrellas, glasses,

gloves galore, coats, lunch boxes

and even more. Tell

me, please, that there’s a glue

to stick together

kids and stuff before my mind

is lost or my face turns blue.

Those Turkeys

Just missing our car,

three wild turkeys flew in

front of us making

the kids ask a question they

couldn’t resist – “Why

did the turkeys cross the road?”

A slew of answers

came pouring forth, forcing me

to groan and mutter,

“to get the young turkeys in

the car to spew and sputter.”

Winter Wait

The color has drained

from the trees, leaving only

green and brown. Branches,

grey and bare, reach upward to

the sky. The land waits

now and we wait too , if not

for color, at least for snow.

In Between

Sitting here before

the sun wakes up and the moon

goes to bed, I too

am in an in between place

after stop, before

go. Until I get more clear,

I guess it’s best to move slow.

The Elect

Feed the hungry? Clothe

the poor? What do you take us

corporations for?

People with large hearts of gold?

How will that help our

bottom line, our investors.

and ourselves get the

heaven we’ve been striving for?

That’s what the Supreme Court’s for.

Sentinels Of Green

In the winter rain

cedar, juniper, and pine

shine amidst trees grown brown or

bare – tall sentinels

of green against a bleak and

barren sky. Perhaps

snow will come, perhaps it won’t

but we know these trees

will hold their green no matter

what the day or season brings.

Lost And Found

At a loss for words,

I ask my granddaughters for

some help. “What should I

write about?” I ask and they

reply, “How about

how wonderful we are or

how the moon reflects

upon the pond or the snow

that’s on the way?” I

consider each suggestion

carefully and then

settle on this unspoken

one for which I find the words.
