Take one small house, add
two teen girls and one preteen.
Mix with two large dogs.
Stir in one quiet-craving
grandmother. Simmer
briefly. Add a dash of cold
weather. Let sit. Serves no one.

The tune was catchy
and before I knew it, I
was caught – nabbed by a
repetitious melody,
bound by a steady
beat. No use trying to get
free – I’ll sing myself to sleep.

The place was pretty
enough and well-kept. The day
was blue-sky sunny
and the temperature just right –
yet a palpable
melancholy soon settled
in, hinting of dark
secrets time could not erase
nor cosmetics conceal.

It took a lifetime
to get here – to this little
brown house I call home.
Nestled among rolling hills,
tucked beneath tall pines,
sitting at water’s edge, it
rests. I know with all
my being I don’t own this
small house and land. They own me.

(With gratitude to all who helped make this dream a reality)
So … to speak or not
remains a haunting question
for parents of teens
and it’s no consolation
to know whichever
you choose will surely be wrong,
at least in their teenage minds.

Is it wrong to steal
someone else’s prayer? My
friend Georgianne spoke
to my larcenous heart and
funny bone with her prayer:
“Please turn this whine into water.”

As winter draws near
do those deciduous trees,
feeling deserted,
give their evergreen sisters
an envious look
as they watch their own leaves leave
or do they sigh with relief?

When all three of them
agreed I need not use my
limited supply
of time and energy to
meet with their teachers
at the appointed time, I
somehow knew I must
set aside their deep concern
for my well-being and go.

No one ever said
this practice stuff was easy –
not when we prefer
to do things our way or no
way. Mindful practice
takes egoless commitment
and a strong, wide-open heart.

Strolling down the road,
those wild turkeys seized their
chance and organized
a small parade. After days
of endless rain, it
was time to celebrate – they
must have been stir-crazy too.
