Before the rain began,
under gray skies,
Knox and I walked.
He had time to
chase a few squirrels,
gather some sticks,
and tend to his usual
morning business.

The rising sun
is beyond my control,
but I can still enjoy it.
My rising temper
is a different story.

Today Knox showed me
how to find joy and you’re right,
it has to do with sticks.
Joy is scattered all around us,
and when we open our eyes
and see it, like Knox, let’s
celebrate its presence
and take it for a run.

Today’s yard: moving
mosaic of dark and light,
a joint gift from clouds and sun.

We can’t do it all,
but we can always do something,
even if it’s only
to take a breath and refresh.

Every evening it’s the same.
Murphy comes and lies
beside me on the bed.
There’s no nudging
to be petted, no demands
of any kind, just a gentle purring
as her eyes softly close.
We’re together and for us
that’s enough.

October sunrise
brings cooler weather as geese
honk their way southward.

Cardinal calls out
to falling yellow leaf:
“Race you to the ground!”

An ordinary
country road, shimmering in
slowly shifting mist,
adds a note of mystery
to a daily drive to work.

Whenever I leave
the room, Murphy scolds me for
failing to ask permission.
