Sometimes I wonder.
I post a poem every day,
but yesterday I mistakenly posted two.
The title of the second poem?
“Doubletake”.

On this windy day
the squirrels look puzzled
as the leaves chase each other
across the yard, but they soon return
to their favorite pastime:
scarfing down stolen birdseed.

Chilly morning air
nibbles at fingers
as rising sun promises
warmer air to come.

After trying some mushrooms
and ending up at the emergency vet
Knox decided it’s better
to limit his adventures to sticks.

Among the fallen leaves,
a dandelion smiles.
It’s not winter yet.

A tiny bell rang
calling me to pause and come
home to the moment.
Until then I didn’t know
I’d wandered so far away.

On my way to work today
I was chanting,” I choose joy”
when suddenly my car filled
with an odious smell. I guess
the universe decided to call my bluff
and see if that skunk
would be met
with joy or an angry huff.

My days are slower, my agility less.
I spend time with clouds and earth,
listen to wind move in trees and watch
the pond catch the moon.
I’m not settling down or settling for.
At eighty I’m just settling in.

From a bare stump,
the sad remains of a well-loved tree,
new growth springs…
a reminder once again
of the surprising gifts this land
brings every single day.

is in a sunny mood. but
