Drivers honk as they pass
young kids dancing and waving,
putting on a show just for them
at a busy workday’s end.

In the late evening
an owl inquired, “Who?”
.Knox looked up and stared
at a nearby tree as if to say,
“ Squirrels, that’s who.”

My controlling friend
read a book on letting go
and has scheduled times
and arranged for places to
lie back and go with the flow.

After Knox’s mushroom trip,
outdoors he is on a leash.
I’ve tried to tell him

than mushrooms
and chasing squirrels,
but he’s not buying it.

Autumn’s coffers overflow
with gold, gifting all
who choose to partake of such
amazing natural bounty.

All it takes is one
swish of a squirrel’s tail and Knox
is off and running.
By now I think when they spot
him, they try to still the swish.

Instead of keeping score today,
I counted the blessings that came my way,
minimizing suffering
and compounding joy.

When change is impossible,
insisting things be otherwise,
lands us in a prison
of anger and despair.
Surrender to harsh reality
can free us to find moments
of joy even there.
