They’re back,
those jaunty, blue bachelors
lining the road.
There’s nothing buttoned up
about them as they give
sweet daisies the eye.

Round and round I go,
spinning the same old story.
It’s time for me to
take a break in hopes I’ll find
some better material.

Sadness has a way
of sneaking in unannounced
and uninvited,
sometimes refusing to leave
even when politely asked.
It can be helpful then
to let him stay and mingle with
our other guests who may have
heartwarming and interesting
stories to share.

The forecast was for rain
and for rain I was prepared, but
when I awoke to sunny skies,
I gladly set the gray aside,
grateful for some outside help
in shifting inside gloomy weather.

This morning I awoke to the chatter of birds,
the meowing of cats, the whining of dogs.
They made certain I couldn’t miss
their plaintive cries beseeching me to arise
and properly prioritize the basic needs
of such hungry creatures.

Today begins with
not quites and almosts.
Whether I take that as
a judgement, a description,
or a challenge
is entirely up to me.

Honeysuckle days,
firefly nights foreshadow
summer’s seasonal delights.

That tree was made for climbing
and if I wasn’t eighty-one
I’d give it a try. Perhaps
I’ll get in shape
and give it a try by and by

I never saw it
because I failed to look, but
sight unseen, it inched
closer, stared me in the face,
and screamed, “Wake up, sleepy head!”.
