Though there was plenty
of food and plenty of space,
some squirrels came
not to dine,
but to pick a fight
which set me to thinking
how like squirrels
we humans can be.

June has turned up the heat.
Hoping July doesn’t boil over.

Trying to make a point,
I said something deliberately absurd,
and watched with astonishment
as his shoulders relaxed,
his face beamed,
and he said, “You’re absolutely right.
I’m so glad you’ve seen the light.”

by my attempts at cleverness.
She folded her arms against her chest,
and said she’d return when
I opened my eyes and wrote from my heart.

flashes of dancing light stands
a small child whispering,
“Look, the stars are falling.”

refused to listen
and all night long they kept on
asking, WHO? WHO? WHO? WHO? WHO?

the unobstructed flow of
breath, but now I am
grateful for each cough-free breath
I take and an unclogged nose.

to say as they flew by,
but I couldn’t understand
such elevated talk.

She said she wanted
to give her grievances a rest,
but those who know her best
think that will only happen
when she herself is laid to rest.
