In spite of sitting

December twilight
softly announces
the day will be
getting colder.

When the temperature drops
below thirty-two,
I prefer to stay warm and snug.
Knox, however, has other ideas
which he insists on sharing.
I finally concede and as we leave
I scowl at the cats who lie on their beds
wrapped in warmth and looking smug.

Another year.
Another overcooked turkey.
Another green bean casserole.
Another bowl of cranberry sauce.
Another pan of pumpkin pie.
Another… the list goes on and on

Whoopie Doo!

when it’s far more likely that
we’re just trying to hold on.

In all the flurry
the squirrels made, that small bird
just sat and observed.

Just across the road
Pax, a dog, has come to live.
Knox is pleased to have met at last
a fellow lover of big sticks.
He’s tried for years to show me how
to snatch them up and run around,
but now he’s found a just right pal
and can let things rest with this old gal.

The dark may be good
for sleeping, but we shouldn’t
decide to live there.
