the moment so the moment
reached out and seized me.

Even on this rainy day
the daffodils trumpet
their golden song.

This Spring that old tree
stands without a leaf, but
its gaunt beauty remains.

As his wife is handed
the folded flag, our eyes fill
with tears for the loss
of husband, father, grandfather,
uncle, brother, father-in law, and friend –
a man who lived with honor,
intelligence, kindness, loyalty, and mischievous wit.

Dressed in bridal white,
that tree stands alone waiting
to unite with green.

Those birds wonder why I think
they need a poem
when it’s clear
they have their own songs.

Even as folks fret and fight,
flowers continue to bloom,
birds continue to sing.

As the sun slowly rises,
the sleeping world wakes,
wondering what the day will bring.

The lawn is scattered
with tiny flowers seizing
their place in the sun
before the yearly mowing begins.
