In its search for light
that tree’s branch took a few twists,
but finally found
what it was looking for. Now
it gives birds a place to rest.

On this wee patch of ground
there’s a whole lot going on.
There’s more than I can hear or see
as one note in this moving symphony.
JDG
For a bird that looks
so ominous, that raven
always dines in peace,
doesn’t threaten smaller birds,
joins them for their morning feast.
JDG
It’s after midnight
and all through the house
grandkids are stirring,
but not me and the mouse.
JDG
I woke up to find
the land around me was now
an outdoor sauna
through which I was unprepared
to walk but Knox disagreed.
JDG
That raven came for
a sample and ended up
eating a full meal.
JDG
I didn’t mean to hop
on that thought cloud
and drift into the past,
but when Knox gave his leash
an unexpected tug
I made a sudden landing.
JDG
We were regaled with
something that sounded more like
bird commentary than song.
JDG
Unlike those two mourning doves
who wouldn’t give an inch,
those three ravens made space
for each other and enjoyed
their meal in peace.
JDG
Little did they know,
but more knowledge would not help,
What this task needed was heart.
