on fallen bird seed
while Mama stands watch
and a small rabbit
looks on from afar.

establishing primacy,
those mourning doves failed to eat.

On those dark days when
pain threatened to rule, Frida
fought back with pencil and brush.

September sunlight
strokes the pond, reminding us
to treasure its warmth
