As the sun slowly rises
and the moon slips away,
the pets awake
and loudly suggest
I do so too.

Seven was plenty
and eight was too many
as squirrels and birds lined
the porch rail to dine.
JDG
Seeing the moon outside my window
helped me remember
even when I’m in the dark
there’s light to be found
somewhere.
JDG
There’s no arguing
with these pets of mine.
They know exactly when
they’re supposed to dine
and if I dawdle a tiny bit
they act as though
I’ve lost my mind.
JDG
Just ask any dog;
sometimes people are mean and
sometimes they are kind.
You need to pay attention
to any signal they send.

The gravel crunches
under foot as Knox and I
start our morning walk,
but he quickly leaves the road
to follow the lead of his nose.
JDG
Although I had heard
of this place and even knew
some of its residents,
I never thought I’d end up here,
but that’s where I am. Turns out
it’s nothing like I thought
it would be and actually
I’m lucky to have arrived.
JDG
So many voices
filled her head
that she couldn’t
find her own.
JDG
With October nearly gone
and the real cold almost here,
let’s celebrate this in between time
when we find ourselves
saying goodbye and hello
like we do with each passing moment
and every breath we take
consciously or not.
JDG
I suggest he reschedule,
but Knox has pressing business
that requires immediate attention
so out we go at 5:30 this morning.
