Not one more word was
needed, but I found a few
nevertheless.

Check, check, check, check, check.
Everything needed is done.
Time to relax and have fun.

The raindrops fall,
making tiny circles
in the puddles
on the porch.
A squirrel,
clutching birdseed,
lifts his small paws
to his mouth.
A wee bird sings,
calling his companions
to the feast.
I, damp with joy,
sit and dryly watch.

Happy Dog Days! For months now that branch,
damaged in a storm, has hung,
stark and bare of leaves,
leaving us with memories of
how branch and tree used to be.

Two cats asleep on
the dog’s bed, their backs
to the sliding glass door,
a female cardinal pecking
at birdseed on the porch floor –
I, propped on my bed,
watch and write.
Four creatures, each
in their own way, content
at the close of day.

Yesterday’s heat
must have melted
Summer’s heart because
today she blessed us
with a cool surprise.

The older I get
the more grateful I am for
small things – things like that
lone yellow flower greeting
the sun as a frog hopped by.

I may not be ready
to dance in the rain,
but I can stand under
an umbrella and maybe
even smile as I watch it fall.
