Layers of thoughts,
layers of feelings
obstruct my view.
Need a love cloth
to dust my soul.

Small accomplishments
can be satisfying in
a really big way.

Scratchy call of crow,
bluejay’s fluttering wings –
Just to be here
is enough.

Saturday’s gentle rain
quiets an overactive mind,
releases tensions tied to busyness,
gives even the obstreperous squirrels
a chance to rest.

Weighted down by rain,
blown by hefty winds, most trees
make it through the storm
by staying firmly grounded
but also able to bend.

Sun, clouds, and sky
put on a fiery show,
delighting us
before tomorrow’s storm.

Over and over that tree shoot
ascends between the boards
of my porch, and over and over
I say “no” in a very cutting way.
I don’t know which one of us
will have the final say,
but I sense that tree shoot
has some inside knowledge
from an undisclosed source.

As I rest beneath
the dark blanket of night, I
slowly close my eyes
to all my daytime concerns
and open myself to sleep.

I got out of the way
of a runner, a biker,
a speeding car,
but still found it hard
to get out of my own way.

Outside a Sunday chorus
celebrates the shifting nature of things.
Invited to join, I’m reluctant at first,
but soon shift too and together,
sun, clouds, trees, breeze, and I
shift and sway, smile, and sing.
In the distance the crows
cackle with delight and even
the stubborn bluejays join in
as Knox runs around with a half-chewed stick.
