Everything Goes

I think to myself

everything  goes.

Hummingbirds visit for a while

as do daisies and buttercups.

Green leaves yield to red and gold

leaving bare branches to weather the cold.

Soon the branches get covered with snow

and before long the snow, too,  goes.

That double rainbow that brought such delight

only lingered for a while.

Everything goes, I tell myself

as you slowly pull away,

but some return

and even when they don’t

memories remain

until the one remembering

also slips away.
