For years
they had grown together,
those three tall pines.
They stood firm
as land was cleared,
a road built, a house raised.
Soon, on planted grass,
kids ran, dogs barked, deer roamed.
In the big wind a single tree fell –
one day standing,
the next day gone –
two brothers left
to carry on.

Oh, this is so sad – and brilliantly penned. We had two elms, siblings I suspect in our yard. Two years ago one died and within a year the other died as well. We so wanted to keep them alive we had them caved into a pair of blue herons looking up to the future. They stand right out of my writing window. I send wishes for health to the two survivors.

What a great idea, LuAnne, to have them carved into a pair of blue herons looking up to the future. I have a special affinity for trees and birds so your comment really touched me. Thank you.
