It’s Just Us

Not one of those leaves

declares its independence

from the tree, nor does

the tree announce itself

free and independent

of ground or sky

or whim of weather.

Without thought, they claim

their place – one part

of an interactive whole.

It’s just us unwisely named

homo sapiens who deny

what the leaves and tree

already know.

  1. Joan, what an apt independence day poem. Why do we continue to seek independence from the ground or the sky or even the “whims of weather”? Or each other for that matter.

Thanks LuAnne. I think, in an acknowledgement of the interactive whole, I could easily include your words “or each other for that matter” in this poem. 🙂
