Sitting discretely

across the room in Five Guys

while my granddaughter,

now fourteen, celebrates her

birthday with a beau

of the same age, I reflect

on their obvious

enjoyment of each other

and their total lack

of self-consciousness though she

is five eleven

and he no more than five five.

Their relationship

has endured over time and

her change of schools. It

could serve as a model for

more “adult” relationships.
