A Neighborly Exchange

He came, sent by a neighbor,

to see if I could use his help.

For thirteen years I’d mowed this land myself,

but now, it seemed others saw

what I could not yet see.

“He told me not to come if I’d been drinking,”

he said, then later, after I told him his fee

was not enough, he looked at me and asked,

“Have you been drinking?”
