Upon arising

I saw several birds,

perched on the seedless

porch rail, watching me.

Apparently they hoped I’d

open my eyes, see their plight,

and make things right

and clouds vie for dominion.

Today the clouds seem

to be winning, but have faith,

the sun’s light is always there.

challenged the birds.

Before the sun rose

they begged me

to feed them

so they could

fill the air

with song.

cold weather slips in, but takes

off when Sheriff Sun arrives.

Lawns are overwhelmed

with trees’ multiple gifts of

gently falling leaves.

A few uncomfortable truths,

faced with courage,

can make us

stronger and better

than an abundance of

self-serving lies.

at the feet of tyrants,

you can expect to be kicked.

Over the next few days,

the whole world will see

what kind of nation

we aspire to be.
