Round and Round It Goes

Fifty-five minutes,

uninterrupted except

by my thoughts – what

better way to spend

this unearned coin of time than

writing a thank-you

note to the universe for

this unexpected open space.

~

Unfortunately

my note of thanks has changed to

a note of complaint.

After fifty-five minutes

of waiting in my

car and dashing off my note

of thanks , I ‘m ready

to roll and, yep, you guessed it,

a strange sound and no

movement. Triple A says I’ll

have seventy-five

minutes to write another

note to my friend the universe.

All Too True

Frankenstein was no monster.

An apple was not the forbidden fruit.

Alas, it turns out to be all too true –

a little learning’s a dangerous thing,

robbing us of what we thought we knew.

Mind Games

Sometimes the mind, like

a very focused mouse, bats

a small failure from

one corner to another

til it’s diverted

by a more appealing prey

and begins its game

anew. When we’re the field on

which the game is played

and the weary witness too,

we look to the breath

to shift the game, the field, and

the witness’s point of view.

Workshop – Opening Night

That wasn’t so bad.

They didn’t hiss, twist, wiggle,

or groan. The equipment

all worked and the lights stayed on.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring,

but we’ll show up and so will they,

all of us willing to take the plunge,

to go deep, to be brave,

to see and let ourselves be seen.

On Thin Ice

Although I wouldn’t

recommend it, you can skate

on thin ice and still

get to the other side as

that creature’s rough skid marks show.

We Who Think We Know

Without a nod or turn of head,

we who think we know,

walk briskly by whatever

doesn’t line up  with our view.

Thus, we exclude what we can’t

bend  as we march lemming- like

 into a preconceived sea.

A Movable Feast

And now they come, red

birds and blue, grey birds and brown,

flitting from cedar

to pine, preparing to dine

at the feast we’ve placed

before them – flying flowers

on this ice-encrusted day.

Who Knows?

They say there’ll be snow

and the kids believe it’s so.

Their excitement mounts

because a few days ago

school was delayed two hours

 because of freezing rain.

Who knows what a bit of snow will do?

Guardians at the Gates

If only there were

paper dragons instead of

paper gates guarded

by bored  bureaucrats whose sole

function is to keep us out.

What Beckons

While others long for

far off lands, exotic foods,

and unfamiliar

faces, what beckons me is

what I already

know – a small round house and moon

light on a beloved pond.
