As the sun starts its
long arc upward, the morning
silence holds, and in
its bowl-shaped hands I float.
For now. For now. For just now.

A strange dream last night –
We’re sitting beneath
a glass ceiling.
Outside and overhead
birds gather.
Looking up, I see
bird poop falling like snowflakes from on high.
I say, “Oh look, bird poo.”
In the dream this was a play on,
“Oh look, Bordeaux.”
Interpretations, anyone?
Let those symbols speak!

She sits alone and tugs
at memory’s fraying cloth.
Enough may remain
to wrap herself in borrowed
warmth as others chat nearby.

Meaning making animals that we are,
we struggle to
form patterns,
to make
sense
of
that life
stew we call
experience,
cooking up stories, essays, poetry.

Hot nights, hotter days –
add a splash of rain – result?
a summer sauna

We are all enslaved
By that which we hold most dear,
Our family and friends,
Our most treasured possessions,
Our loves and passions,
They bind us; these chosen chains.
Shackles that can have no key.
The biggest difference between
Jane Austen and
me is that she
wrote and wrote well
while all around her, daily life
swirled and stuttered.
I write too, but
not at all well
in this cacophony of kids,
and cats and dogs
and plaintive pleas
of look at me.

Horizontal lightening sparks through the sky,
fighting fire with
fire on
summer

Sighting hibiscus
blossoms, bees and butterflies
dance to Summer’s song.
