Must we choose only
one? What would the world look like
if we viewed it through
poetry’s shining eyes and
the steady gaze of reason?

Must we choose only
one? What would the world look like
if we viewed it through

As the fire of
fall slowly flames out, we look
for warmth within.

Before I was even aware, I was
pushed out the door
onto the
practice
field
called
life. It
soon became
clear I needed
more time, but that’s not the way the game’s played.

Tossing and turning,
the trees spent an uneasy
night huddled at water’s edge.
JDG
Stripped of their leaves, vines
clinging to their trunks, those trees –
temporary homes
for eager squirrels, tired birds –
are open to whatever comes.
JDG
If I didn’t know
better, I’d swear that crow
was flirting with me –
cocked head, knowing look, beak raised,
wings shimmering in the sun.
JDG
After a lifetime
of struggle to stay within
my own skin, it just
doesn’t seem fair to leave so
soon after arriving there.
JDG
Before the morning guests arrive,
while the moon’s full
light is held by
stilled land and pond,
before the sun shakes itself free
from horizon’s
grasp and rises
to greet the sky,
this time outside of time harbors
a hush of peace
undisturbed by
concerns of time.
JDG
I knew what they weren’t,
but not what they were as they
dipped and dove only
to rise and soar again. If
they and their other
animal friends have totem humans,
they might want to reconsider.
JDG
What if the time we want to save is not
daylight? What if
we prefer
to save
night
light
with its
changing moons,
shifting shadows,
and star-lit wanderings across dark skies?
