It’s strange how
these exercise movements
reflect my mood –
up and down, back and forth,
open and closed.

Grief held us together
and fashioned a bond
through all we lost.
May we now come together
and fashion a bond
from the joy that remains
and the fullness of life ahead.

Instead of taking
a nap, I exercised and
refueled in another way.
The going is slow,
but so am I and I find
I’m slowly learning.

Shades of Halloween
colored the sky. Crows circled,
croaking bleak greetings.

Halloween workout
scares goblins of weariness
away – a sweet treat.

It has taken me almost
seventy-five years to discover
there’s nowhere to be
except right where I am.
I was always on my way
to somewhere that wasn’t
and a lot of times I still am.

Why didn’t I start
this years ago? I don’t know,
but I’m glad to do it now.

Autumn sky weeps, but
it’s hard to tell if it’s from
golden joy or grief.

While exercising today
I gently turn my focus away
from just getting it done.
I turn my attention, instead,
to how my body feels
as I move and breathe
and, I must say,
it is easier and a bit more fun.

Sometimes when I need it the most,
the right book appears,
the right song plays,
the right person calls,
or at just the right moment
a car passes and its license plate
makes me smile.
Maybe it’s happenstance
and maybe it’s not.
Either way, I give thanks
for the timely arrival
of unexpected grace.
