That fawn’s mother taught
her the importance of not
being seen or heard
and she stood still and silent
as Knox and I ambled by.

It’s a winding road
from birth to death with many
unexpected stops and turns, but
I’m glad I get to make this trip
and don’t have to go alone.

For the past several days,
after most of the birdseed’s gone,
some ravens stop by.
They peck at a few seeds,
then nod their heads and fly away.
I guess we’ve earned their approval..

guilty for taking a nap.

I got up early
to view the slightly rippled
surface of Moon’s self-portrait
lying unhung in the pond
as owls hooted their reviews.
JDG
They may have arrived first,
those squirrels, but
the hungry birds won’t
let them dine in peace.
After being dive bombed,
the squirrels finally
make room at the table.

It’s breathtakingly hard
to remember to pause,
take several breaths and think
before we respond in a way
we’ll later regret.
JDG
Hummingbirds sip from
the few remaining purple flowers.
Though they’ll soon move on
to other blooms, they’ll remember
and return next year
to their faithful purple friends.
