They say the whole
is greater than the sum
of the parts, but they’re
misquoting Aristotle who
said the whole is something
besides the parts.
It seems that’s part of the problem
with words: they can lead us
down some rabbit holes.

Still night.
Shining stars.
Knox and I walk.
I look up.
He looks down.
I sniff the air.
He sniffs the ground.
Between us we have it covered.

Silhouetted against the slowly
brightening sky, dark branches
of trees become more clear.

Be here.

clouds, reminding us the stars,

Yesterday nothing was halfway
as sun, moon, and earth aligned
and for a moment the full moon
was totally eclipsed, but soon
she escaped earth’s shadow.
May earth escape ours as well.

I don’t know if you’ve
ever been scolded by crows,
but they waste no caws.

All along our walk,
Knox selects sticks and carries
them home, holding them aloft.
