These housemates of mine
don’t need words. Their eyes, their barks,
their yips and meows, their purrs
and hisses, their moans and nudges,
their sighs and snuggles
speak clearly without a syllable spoken.
They listen to my words, but
they’re not really needed.
They get me completely without them.

I spot a hummingbird
and decide to look for
some sweetness instead.

Sometimes everywhere
we turn, we are turned away.
If the universe
has a plan, it would help if
we could be kept in the loop.

patience in hopes that
after eighty years I might
learn something at last.

this cloud-covered night.
