Though I enjoy each holiday, it’s the
day after I
really love –
when all
is
done,
when things
slow way down
and we feast on
left-overs, good talk, and unscheduled time.

Glazed with white, the November ground greets us –
an offering
of Autumn’s
simple
grace.
In
morning’s
early light,
we give thanks for
those we’ve loved who rest in earth’s grace-filled white.

In the dark of early morning, before
kids, dogs, and cats
begin to
stir, I
sit,

suspect it’s
deep affection
for what’s brought them joy and deserves a name.

“Practice radical inefficiency,”

Slowly summer colors shift and so do
we. Petals fall
and days grow
crisp as
we
get
crisper
too, setting
summer reading
aside for learned books and study guides.

It’s not only hard
times that test our character.
Easy times do too.

Pope Francis and the Dalai Lama call
us to a broad
compassion
beyond
rules
that
constrict
hearts and close
minds. They remind
us love is large enough to hold us all.

Somehow the unexpected sight of those
swaying purple
flowers at
water’s
edge
eased
a gloom
that had spread
itself over
an otherwise sunny summer morning.
