“What is saving your life right now?”she asks,
giving me pause.
Just now, wings
aglow,
that
small
bird seized
my sadness
and flew away,
leaving behind a momentary peace.

In that space between what was said and what
was heard lies a
chasm or
a bridge.
A
look,
a tone,
a simple
gesture can tell
us whether to don parachute or shoes.

Heads tucked between their paws, our two dogs sleep.
Wiser than we,
they know when
to call
it
quits,
to give
themselves and
their many tasks
a rest, to spend some time among their dreams.

Those wild geese created quite a flap
down at the pond.
Just minutes
before,
all
was
serene,
but once they
landed honking
and shaking, turtles, sun, and silence fled.

At last the ground is being prepared and
some good seeds found
for planting.
Then, if
we
just
weed and
water them,
new green will come,
but in its own time and in its own way.

It is a good thing that ocean of love
I discovered
is so vast
and so
deep
’cause
lately
it’s had to
work really hard
to tumble smooth all the rocks I’ve tossed in.

(See the poem, The Pact, posted on July 9 if further clarification is needed.)
I’m definitely aware I’m part of
the human race.
I’m always
racing
here
and
there and
everywhere,
but it’s really
just a human being I long to be.

Firefly nights and honeysuckle days –
it doesn’t get
much better
than this.
On
hills
of green
cattle graze
and I graze too
on summer’s sweet spread of simple delight.

If there’s one thing sweltering heat teaches
it’s to slow down,
take a break,
drink deep,
let
things
unfold,
take pleasure
in small tasks well
done, cherish breezes – whoops that’s six not one.

Toby’s literally in the clover
as he gazes
out upon
his world.
From
his
perch he
views birds, bees,
and butterflies
and, on reflection, pronounces them – good.
