When I have nothing
left to give, these few acres
I call home let me
rest in their green arms and set
pushy to do lists aside.

Pungent smell of skunk
greets us as the door opens
on this sunlit day.
Knox’s curiosity
tempers my disgust… We walk.

One red bird and one
blue bird share the same platform
and peacefully dine,
a feat much yearned for by some
of the red and blue humankind.

Lately the weather
has been a quick change artist,
one minute clothed in
dark, tumultuous outfits,
the next in bright, swaying garb.

As Murphy the cat
watches, the squirrels sprint across
the porch. One pauses
and looks back at her as though
asking how she likes the show.

Waiting, wondering,
all the what ifs and then whats
pin me down until
I shake myself loose, breathe, look
them in the eye, say “go play”.

Seems June is trying
to make up for May’s crazy
ways by offering
a just right summer blend of
cooling breeze and sun-filled days.

I admit I’m not
convinced when my grandkids tell
me their unpicked up
mess is really a display
of their modern art projects.

Happy Blues are back,
lining the road, sharing their
color and sheen with
all who pass by, hoping their
daisy girlfriends will stop by.
