Grandkids return home
for Thanksgiving and Knox
looks pointedly at his leash.
Does he want a walk or
does he just wonder
what’s been unleashed?

It seems I live beneath
an avian thoroughfare.
Birds can get noisy,
but unlike us,
they don’t have crashes.
JDG
The rustling of many wings
fills the morning air
as flock after flock flies south.
The pileated woodpecker
doesn’t seem to give a peck.
The male cardinal shakes his head.
The common raven gives them caws.
They’ll happily spend the winter here
and eat their meals upon my deck.
JDG
A small sighting
warmed my day –
a dandelion shining
among fallen leaves.
Life persists amidst decay.
JDG
Lying in the dark,
wrapped in silence,
I let the day come to me.
No need to leap from bed
demanding the sun hurry with its light.
It will come soon enough, kiss my hand,
and invite me to the daily dance.
JDG
A sliver of me
shivered as I imagined
our cold morning walk,
but I was soon warmed by
picturing Knox and his sticks.
JDG
Though we’re all
on a journey,
we each have our
own path.
JDG
Still night.
Shining stars.
Knox and I walk.
I look up.
He looks down.
I sniff the air.
He sniffs the ground.
Between us we have it covered.
JDG
Corn’s been harvested.
Cut stalks on the ground remain.
They’re times when I feel the same.
JDG
Silhouetted against the slowly
brightening sky, dark branches
of trees become more clear.
Inside the demands of cats
and dog also grow more
bright and clear. Inside and out
the message is clear –
another day has come.
Be here.
