Just when we think we’ve
figured things out, life throws us
another riddle.

Rain drops fall
leaving tiny circles
on the porch
where the birds come,
even in the rain,
for their morning feast.

When surrounded by
so many voices, it’s
hard to hear our own.

Knox scoffs at the thought
that I trained him when it’s clear
he’s still training me.

A congress of birds
met on the porch concerning
the distribution
of seeds, but stayed divided
even when the squirrels appeared.

So happy to have
this “three bear” kind of day –
not too hot, not too cold,
a day that feels just right .

Knox and I walked, not in the snow,
but by the lingering light
of snow moon as it brought
the magic of heaven to earth.

Almost every day
begins the same way with Knox,
the cats, and birds making
their needs clear.
In meeting their needs,
my need is also met.
