Knox and deer lock eyes.
Neither one moves. They just stand…
just stare. Minutes pass
until squirrel breaks their trance
and Knox is off and running.

He was told there was joy
among the ashes,
but all he got
when he looked
was burns.

Rooster crows over
rising sun. He must think
he did it all by himself.

More rain is forecast,
but I get up early
and walk in the sun.

When our teachers are gone
and we’re on our own,
another kind of learning begins.

The air’s alive with
flying things celebrating
rain’s end, sun’s return.

When we become clear
about what we need and what
we’d like, we can then
turn to what others may need
and like and begin from there.

Every living thing
needs space to grow, but problems
arise when energies collide,
restraints are few,
and space is limited.

Rain soaked tree branches
bend toward the ground…soon the sun
will dry them off, lift them up.
