Universe, please stop playing with me.
It was weird enough
that in response to my choosing
“open” as my guiding word for this year,
you giggled and sent the stench of skunk.
You made your point. I got it.
An open attitude is easier said than done.
But, on this cold day, did you have to
mysteriously leave our house without heat?
I’m trying real hard not to replace
my guiding word with a swear word.
Please stop playing with me.

Silently saying
the word, “open”, as I breathe
in and out helps me
slow down, relax and open
to what is right here, right now.

Before I went out
I reminded myself
my guiding word for the year
was “open”. I paused, then opened
the door and was greeted
by the strong stench of skunk.
“Universe,” I thought,
” you have a warped sense of humor.”

I asked for a word
to serve as a compass this year.
I waited. Then, softly but clearly
the answer came… “open”.

flood
in,
wash
away
years.

Damp leaves glistening
in the morning sun announce
the start of a new
day. May we too reflect light
in winter’s recurring gray.

Looking for some fun,
Murphy approaches sleeping
friends one by one, gives
a hiss when she can’t rally
them. Looks at me. Not you too?

Opened present.
looked inside.
Teary eyes.
JDG
Knox is teaching me
that wonder abounds, but
we must take the time to look,
and when we spot it, it’s ok
to bark with joyous appreciation.

Snuggled inside,
