When I chose “open”
as my guiding word for 2024,
I didn’t think the universe
would respond with
the stench of skunk,
the loss of heat,
and the need to quarantine.
It looks like what my choice opened
was a great big can of worms.

I discovered my good friends
are really good when
I got mixed up and arrived
a week early for our visit.
Instead of greeting me
with open mouths, they
welcomed me with laughter
and wide open arms.

The cold kiss of frost
carried no delight on that
frigid winter morn.

Pink clouds linger
as the sun slowly sets.
Are they embarrassed
to say goodbye so soon
after storm’s darkness

Overflowing pond
lets fish explore areas

Watching the trees sway
in the wind reminds me
it’s possible to be
both rooted and flexible.

In the hurry of
our lives, we often fail to listen
to the soft call of joy.

After yesterday’s
cold, gray, gloom, it feels good to
watch the leaves sparkle
in the sun. Let’s receive the gift
of today with a sparkle all our own.

Your arrival brings a bit of color
to our dining experience
this cold, rainy day.

It just took a glimpse,
but that small blue patch among
all those clouds made me
pause and through that opening
joy poured, washing cares away.
