Come, Wind of Reason,
gently dismantle this
castle of doubt I have built.
It matters not who gave me
the bricks. I built it myself.

If those redbud trees
could speak, I wonder
what they’d say
as we hurry by.
Oh wait, I think
I heard some
colorful language about
creatures in a rush.

It looked like some sort
of ceremonial dance,
making me wonder
if those two birds were courting
or had just gotten married,
though I do know for certain
Knox and the cats were not invited.

day’s start much harder,

Late at night, before
sleep claims me, I find myself
looking at the day now passed;
at the weeks, months, years gone by
all from the comfort of my bed.
It’s been quite a trip.

Knox stopped by my room
to complain he wasn’t
getting enough attention
and he’d have to report me
to dog protective services.

It’s been over twenty years
that I have lived in this small, round house
by the pond. After a lifetime of moves –
Pennsylvania, Virginia, California,
New Jersey, Alabama, Tennessee, Alaska,
Massachusetts, Thailand, North Carolina –
I am at last settled and content
in my one true home.

When the excitement died down
and all the other birds had flown away,
one small chickadee remained
to finish his meal in peace…
well, almost…
but when Knox ran up, brandishing
his latest stick, that wee chickadee flew the coop.
