Peering through a crack
in the sidewalk, a tiny
blue flower surveys the world.

Without intending to,
I moved back and forth
between merry-go-round
and see-saw in my thoughts today
on a wild ride to nowhere.

Before this weekend,
when counting my blessings,
I never thought to include
running water among them.
It took its sudden absence for me
to see how much I took for granted.
Now, everyday, I look around
for one taken for granted thing
and offer a heartfelt thanks.

Knox basks in the sun.
but remains on the lookout
for visitors of
all kinds, two legged or four,
who might like to romp or soar..

When the well pump broke
leaving us without water
this Mother’s Day, I
wondered if the universe
was making a point about
the relationship between
mothers. life, and water.

I rose early to
see the day’s opening act.
For a brief moment
sun and moon shared the stage til
the moon left and joined the stars.

Each day I spread the same seed
along the same porch rail
and wait to see who shows up,
who dines peacefully and who starts a fuss.
Every now and then one of them
leaves a shiny tip. I appreciate the gesture,
but their colorful presence is reward enough.

During the dry spell
we waited impatiently for the rain,
but we failed to foresee
when it finally came
it would make such a big splash.

When I return home
Knox meets me at the door,
lifts his head and howls
as though asking me
where the **** I’ve been.
It’s good to know
I’ve been missed.

When the downpour came,
the birds fled the feeder, but
returned to dine in the drizzle.
