They brought the sun to
earth, those massive sunflowers
and brought us delight.

I am strengthened and softened by
the rooted presence of these trees.
Through drought and downpour,
good times and bad, they are there –
a refuge for squirrels, birds, and me.

After all, it is
July and my muse insists
she needs a vacation,
so off she goes to parts unknown,
leaving me wordless and alone.

I wish I could say
I was basking in the sun,
but the truth is
I feel like I’m trapped
in an air fryer.

After a long and tiring day.
when I heard that young boy invite
his grandmother to sit with him
in the grocery cart and saw her
gently shake her head no,
it was all I could do not
to offer to go in her stead.

Unfortunately,
Knox never met a creature
he didn’t invite
to romp and play as he did
yesterday when we got skunked.

It takes courage to br real.
It feels safer to pretend
to ourselves and to each other.
Thus we hide behind our masks
feeling safe but unseen.

However fleeting,
unexpected moments of
connection can still bring hope.
