I try hard to look
patient and wise, but they look
surprised that I’m still alive.

so much we no longer need
when what we need is
to pause and breathe
and let our breath
carry us.

I watch as a bright
red cardinal darts to a tree.
No darting for me.

Small, furry body,
pressed against my thigh – gentle
purring brings me home.

Focusing on our breath
helps us know
that wherever we are,
wherever we go,
we’re already home.
