The mist slowly lifts
as the sun slowly rises.

the trees, a small deer grazes,
peacefully content for now.

sun high in the sky,
trees wave goodbye
to morning as,
clouds slide by.

Though I walk without
human companions,
I don’t walk alone.
Knox trots beside me,
trees wave greetings,
sun stakes my shoulders,
wind ruffles my hair,

It’s not possible
for Knox to leave a squirrel
unchased or a stick alone.
He doesn’t understand
how it is that I and others can.

Across the almost still pond
the gentlest of ripples
catch the morning light
as nearby trees nod their approval.

Blue jay harasses
female cardinal. Male cardinal
swoops down. Makes things right.

An unfamiliar
peace visited her and she
had the sense to ask
it to linger and to think,
perhaps, about moving in.
