The orchestral sound
of mewing cats, barking dogs,
and chirping birds starts the day.

When push comes to shove
at the bird feeder, some birds
fight; others take flight.

Slipping and sliding
becomes splishing and splashing
as the icy mass
slowly succumbs to warmer
temperatures and the sun.

Yesterday we got
a three-in-one package from
Mother Nature: rain, sleet, snow.

Waiting for the snow,
we creatures here below
must make a choice:
do we stay
or do we go.

Side by side they sleep,
these two unrelated cats
who have become sweet sisters.

Knox emerges from
the mist carrying a huge
blue ball stolen from
his friend Pax and brought home to
supplement his store of sticks.

Knox shook his head
when I opened the door.
He looked at me
with pleading eyes
as if asking me
to turn off the rain.

Starting tomorrow,,,
a promise made today, but
one also made yesterday.

Woke up too early.
Tried to bribe the sleep makers
with a poem, but
there were no takers so I’ll
try counting each breath instead.
