I pause to savor
today’s uneventful calm
as I do what I
can to prepare for the storm
predicted for tomorrow.

On ground and in trees
those black robed visitors hold
a raucous caw cus.
JDG
Blue evening sky
backs up chorus
of bare limbed trees
in a poignant tribute
to the passage of time..

Sometimes this stew
I call my life
gets brought to a brisk boil
and needs to
be placed on simmer.

There they go again,
splashing in the fountain on
this cold, winter day.
Why they do this I can’t say.
After all, it isn’t May.

,
In this open space
beyond yes or no, I stop
talking, relax, and listen.

I sit down, try to write.
Dog and cats put up a fight.
Walk? Snacks? Pats? Play?
They sigh and look my way.
I shake my head and decline.
I just want to sit and rhyme.
They exchange a sullen glance.
Dog begins to paw and prance.
Cats take a different tack,
kneading and purring to call me back.
My eyes widen suddenly.
I was blind, but now I see.
They have come to inspire me.

Every day since winter
announced its icy presence,
we’ve gathered fallen branches,
moved fallen trees,
offered heartfelt thanks
that we’re still standing.
JDG
If lightly I walk
through the heaviness
life brings, perhaps
I’ll have what I need
to graciously give
and also receive.

Power outage.
Knox and I find refuge
at son and daughter-in-law’s house.
Morning brings rude awakening
when Knox, eighty pounds and rising,
bounds onto their bed
and showers them
with grateful kisses.
